Drifting Chronicles
2016 Tamsui Customs Wharf
New Taipei City, Taiwan
Hobe(滬尾) used to be one of the most important export harbors in Taiwan, and was a territory occupied by various nations during periods of colonial occupation. This is the reason that many historical sites remain in the locality. The Tamsui River Delta lies in front of the Tamsui Customs Wharf platform, with Fort San Domingo and a historical church to its rear. Through reversing the historical fate which Hobe has endured, this reminds us of the symbiotic relationship between humanity and nature.
Drifting Chronicles is an ancient boat comprised of driftwood, flipped over. The bottom of the boat is transformed into an island, while the interior of the boat becomes a church, a holy space. This is a metaphor for the idea that all who come to this island, whether they are colonists, traders, missionaries or others, should lay down roots and cherish this island. The driftwood used also evokes a drifting image as one navigates, whether through the forces of nature or artificial navigation. Humanity has continually merged different cultures together, constructing a map of history through maritime navigation.
